Ökowerk Emden

Saline Farming

Translated from the project website

The tasks of Ökowerk in the SalFar project include the cultivation, selection and further use of halophytes, salt-tolerant plants, which occur naturally in the transition area of sea and land and are sometimes very tasty. In addition, as part of SalFar, the Ökowerk is carrying out practice-oriented experiments for the further use of locally occurring natural marine waste materials for soil improvement.

Saline Farming at Ökowerk Emdem

The Ökowerk team optimised the cultivation of edible halophytes for use in the catering industry. Among other things, self-constructed greenhouses were built that enable uncomplicated, flexible and scalable use with low investment costs. The following video shows a comparison of different greenhouses for the commercial cultivation of halophytes. We would be happy to provide interested horticultural businesses with more information about the construction of the greenhouses and the growing conditions for the halophytes we tested.
