Global Campaign on Salinisation

The Saline Agri Map (SAM) contributes to a collective ambition, expressed during the UN 2023 Water Conference and submitted to the Water Action Agenda, to raise awareness about the issue salinization by means of a Global Campaign.

Collaborative partners (see below) strive to collectively first develop the contours and then implement a ‘Global Campaign on Salinization’. The ultimate objective of this Campaign is not only to increase awareness about salinization among policy makers, researchers and practitioners in the global water and food sectors, but also to subsequently formulate and drive a joint agenda (policy - knowledge – implementation). Closing knowledge gaps and sharing information about projects and initiatives to address salinity is an important result of SAM.

We have formulated several underlying principles when shaping the Campaign:

  • It is first and foremost a communication activity that serves a greater purpose: a call to action for policy makers, research and practitioners to develop responses in the face of salinization challenges.
  • The Campaign will boost new ideas, bundle initiatives, and create a stronger (communication) momentum for the benefit of collaborating partners.
  • It will not prescribe one specific response strategy to the salinization challenges. Response strategies may vary between mitigation and adaptation options, depending on local conditions and realities.
  • The Campaign will stress, however, the need for integrated approaches in response to salinity challenges, including cooperation between the working areas of soil, water and crops.
  • It aims to be of added value to all partners, complementary to on-going work and mandates, and is not intended to ‘claim’ already on-going initiatives.

Discussions about the contours of the Campaign are currently ongoing. In case you would like to join or contribute, please contact Babette Bodlaender ([email protected]) and/or Martijn van Staveren ([email protected]

Partners
The first phase of coordination takes place through the Saline Water & Food Systems partnership (convened by NFP and NWP), and with the involvement of international partners such as FAO WASAG, FAO INSAS, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), and the International Center on Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA).
