Salty Agricultura Salina, grow halophyte plants – plants that need seawater to grow and develop – which gives them an incredibly salty flavor, but with much less sodium than regular salt!
Plants of the Salicornia and Sarcocornia genera are found in various hypersaline environments around the world. Although still little known in Brazil, they have been widely cultivated and used in Europe and in countries such as the USA, Mexico, and Israel.
Since the two genera are very similar, the name Salicornia has also become popular to refer to plants of the Sarcocornia genus. Therefore, it is more common to hear people calling these greens “Salicornia” — and that’s how we call them here too.
