The South America Water Partnership (GWP South America) has as its main objective to ensure that the framework of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is applied in an increasing number of countries in the region, as a strategic approach to guarantee water security.
GWP South America was formally established in November 2006. However, since 1998 GWP has been promoting strategies in the region to build understanding of water-related problems and of the processes that must be adopted to achieve responsible management of water resources.
It represents one of the 13 regions driven by the global network and is made up of all GWP members in South America. Currently, GWP South America has more than 300 institutional members from 10 countries.
Much of this membership is organized under National Water Partnerships in seven countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela). In other countries in the region (Paraguay, Bolivia, and Ecuador), members are in the process of establishing their own National Water Partnerships.
