De Zilte Smaak

On Terschelling you can not only see and experience, but also taste! Along the border between sea and island, special pioneer plants (such as sea lavender, samphire, and sea aster) have traditionally grown. These plants not only thrive in salty soils, but also taste fantastic and are healthy. We are happy to let everyone enjoy them. Wild harvesting is unfortunately not allowed, due to the protected status of these plants. Thanks to the De Zilte Smaak Foundation, everyone can still enjoy these delicious salty vegetables: on a saline field behind the dike near Lies, we cultivate various saline crops.

There is also another side to saline crops: did you know that saline plants have the potential to provide a solution to food challenges resulting from rising sea levels and soil salinization?

The De Zilte Smaak Foundation is a partner in the InterReg project SalFar (Saline Farming). The Province of Fryslân supports our initiative, helping us in our start-up phase with a contribution from the Iepen Mienskipfûns.
